Does ice cream typically need a hashgacha? The ingredients usually seem straightforward. Is there a concern about any flavors or cross-contamination?

They do not need a hashgachah. You are correct. If you go to some strange place where they put catfish or chicken in the ice cream, you might wanna run for it.
But all kidding aside, all normal ice cream is fine in the USA, Canada, Europe, India etc.
